Science
At Kyson, Science exemplifies our school values: ‘Give them roots to grow, and wings to fly!’
At Kyson Primary, we aim to provide an engaging science curriculum which builds upon children's natural curiosity. Through our curriculum, we help our children to develop lively enquiring minds and essential skills such as perseverance, questioning, open-mindedness, critical thinking and co-operation. We help our children to acquire knowledge and skills relevant to the fast- changing world in which they live. They experience the world around them through making the most of the outdoor environments in school and within our locality.
Awe, Wonder and Enrichment is key to our science teaching. At Kyson, we hold an annual Science Festival that celebrates a different theme. In 2023, our theme was The Science of Flight. Click here to see a gallery of photographs from this year’s festival.
As well as teaching specific scientific knowledge and building conceptual understanding, investigative skills are built into each science area of study so that children learn how to work scientifically. The children learn the science programme of study through the main types of scientific enquiry. These are observing changes over time, comparative and fair testing, identifying, classifying, pattern seeking and researching. These enquiry skills develop as the children progress through each year group. In EYFS, children learn about science by exploring the world around them through explorative learning possibilities. This includes using the outdoor area and mud kitchen, as well as Forest School sessions to explore the world around them.
Forest School
All children within the Early Years and Key Stage 1 take part in Forest School Activities within our own amazing Forest School area. Click here to see our gallery and for a link to Kyson’s Forest School Handbook.
Each week a group of Year 3 students take an adventure into a forest in Woodbridge as part of our Forest School Programme.

Curriculum
At Kyson, teachers aim to provide students with lessons not only academically rigorous but rich in hands on experiences and memorable moments. Key scientific vocabulary is embedded in taught content and the science curriculum has been mapped out to show clear progression across the key stages. The units of work in science are planned so that they build upon prior learning and individual lessons are tailored to children’s needs through differentiation, both to support and extend. At Kyson, we wish for children to learn practical scientific skills in all years; lessons are planned with a variety of scientific enquiry types in mind such as; pattern seeking, identifying and classifying, secondary research, observing over time and fair/ comparative testing. At the heart of our ethos we aim to enthuse and inspire children about Science, sparking confidence and curiosity for science both moving on to high school and beyond.
