RELiGIOUS EDUCATION
Class RE lessons are taught weekly or in blocked days using the Suffolk scheme of work The Emmanuel Project, which meets the requirements for the Suffolk RE Agreed Syllabus.
At Kyson, the children have weekly assemblies which focus on the key values of our school. Class assemblies, which are led by the children, allow time for reflection, enabling the audience to think quietly about the assembly.
In RE lessons, children can develop their understanding of diversity and different cultures through finding out about the beliefs, celebrations and festivals of different faiths and these are experienced through tasting food, listening to music and watching video clips which often feature people talking about their religion.
Drama is incorporated as much as possible to bring stories to life when learning about different religions.
Emmanuel Scheme of Work
RE at Kyson is planned using ‘The Emmanuel Project’ scheme of work, which was updated in 2023. The updated scheme focuses on the central theme of ‘Where Do I Stand?’ which encourages pupils to think about their own beliefs whilst learning about the beliefs of religions around the world.

Each unit is structured in the same way, following an enquiry cycle of:
- Engage
- Enquire
- Explore
- Evaluate
- Express
Engage – This is where the central theme of the unit is explored in a way in which the children will understand and the aim is to captivate their interest in the theme.
Enquire – This is where children can ask and answer questions about an aspect of the religion which relates to the concept of the unit.
Explore – Children will explore the concept of the unit relating to: important texts, stories and narratives, community practices and the everyday lives of those who follow the religion.
Evaluate – This is where children will take place in an assessment activity or quick quiz to assess their understanding of the topic.
Express – Children may have the opportunity to show their learning from the topic in a creative way. This may be through a display, drama or art work.
