Swimming

At Kyson we value swimming as a key life skill and a brilliant form of physical exercise. We aim for all of our children to reach and exceed the national curriculum expectations for swimming. All Kyson children swim during the summer term.

Every child from Reception to Year 5 has a lesson each week in our own pool. The children are taught by Kyson’s own swimming teachers.

Kyson’s swimming pool was originally built in 1972. We have worked hard to improve and maintain our pool and in recent years it has had a new lining, new filter, new pump and we have replaced sides and roof of the building. The pool is perfect for teaching at 0.65m depth throughout and is heated to 30C.

Our Year 5 children swim at Deben Leisure Centre, in Woodbridge and work towards achieving the national curriculum expectations:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

In 2023 94% of Kyson children were able to swim at least 25m and use a range of strokes. 77% of children achieved the Gold award for personal safety, with the remaining children achieving Silver.
