DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
At Kyson, Design and Technology is taught using the Kapow Primary scheme of work which provides a broad and balanced DT curriculum and allows all children to be challenged and supported in their learning. Skills are taught through five main areas: Structures, Mechanism, Electrical Systems, Cooking and Nutrition and Textiles. A unit on food, cooking and nutrition is taught in every year group.
We believe that Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
Key skills and key knowledge for D.T have been mapped across the school to ensure progression between year groups. This progression focuses on building on their previous learning, improving their design and making skills, being able to evaluate theirs and other work and developing their technical skills.
In our Design and Technology lessons we aim to ensure all children are included through the provision of support where needed, the use of different resources, pre-teaching and ensuring learning opportunities are matched to the needs of pupils of all abilities.
Through our Design and Technology curriculum we aim to:
- Develop the skills of designing, planning, making, adapting and evaluating products for a particular purpose
- Develop an understanding of technological processes, products and their manufacture, and their contribution to our society.
- Nurture creativity, design and innovation and become creative and become problem solvers, as individuals and as part of a team.
- Develop computing skills to allow children to program and control products, to nurture their understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its uses and effects.
- Children will be given opportunities to learn about the work of different designers and their work from all over the world. There will also be opportunities to find out about local designers and have visits and workshops from different designers and innovators.
- Children will build their designs and record their work in a variety of ways and keep examples of their work in Design and Technology books that go with them throughout their school life.
- Children will be able to showcase their work in different way such as displays in the classroom and throughout the school and on the school website.
